December 8, 2003—ATLA Receives Grant from Lilly Endowment, Inc. to Fund ATLAS for Congregations and Clergy Program

Lilly Endowment, Inc. has awarded a grant of $774,750 to the American Theological Library Association (ATLA) to extend the ATLA Serials (ATLAS) program to congregations and clergy. Over the next three years, ATLA will partner with the Indianapolis Center for Congregations (ICC) to add an additional 10 titles to the ATLAS program and to design it specifically for congregations and clergy. ICC will be a vital partner in this project because of their extensive experience with congregations, parish resources, and adult education.

In 1999, ATLA received a grant from the Endowment to fund the ATLAS project, a collection of more than sixty major religion and theology journals selected by foremost religion scholars. ATLAS supplies fully digitized texts of articles as far back as 1949 accompanied by subject indexing from the ATLA Religion Database, ATLA's index to articles, book reviews, and essay collections in theology and religion.

Founded in 1946, ATLA is a scholarly, ecumenical, not-for-profit association dedicated to advancing and supporting theological librarianship and research in religion. For more information, visit the ATLA web site at www.atla.com or call 888.665.ATLA.

November 20, 2003—New Testament Abstracts/ATLA Agreement

The American Theological Library Association (ATLA), an association of more than 900 theological libraries and librarians, is pleased to announce a formal agreement with the Weston Jesuit School of Theology to produce electronic versions of New Testament Abstracts (NTA). The agreement calls for an online version developed by ATLA and available through EBSCO as well as a CD-ROM version of New Testament Abstracts to be produced directly by ATLA.

NTA is a comprehensive and vital tool for all aspects of New Testament studies, providing over 2,000 abstracts annually from more than 500 journals as well as notices on approximately 800 new books. ATLA, producers of the ATLA Religion Database, also offers Old Testament Abstracts (OTA) in collaboration with the Catholic Biblical Association and The Catholic Periodical and Literature Index (CPLI) with the Catholic Library Association. All four databases will be available online from EBSCO.

Christopher Mathews, co-editor of New Testament Abstracts, said "We are confident that this agreement will result in a sophisticated and effective application for our current subscribers and will make this important research tool much more widely available." Dennis Norlin, executive director of ATLA, echoed those sentiments: "Our 900 members are delighted to announce this new partnership and to affirm our commitment to create high quality electronic versions of this highly respected research tool for everyone interested in studying the New Testament and its world."
