Ottawa is the perfect place for conference attendees to savor the rich traditions of Canada’s French and English heritage. The city’s parks, restaurants, and architecture— and its stunning setting on the Ottawa River— will be the ideal backdrop for a week filled with education, networking, and socializing.
“We’re delighted to welcome so many of our colleagues to Ottawa for the conference,” said André Paris, Chief Librarian, Jean-Léon-Allie Library, Saint Paul University. Volunteers from the university comprise the Annual Conference Local Host Committee, which is charged with introducing conference attendees to the local culture. “While they are here in Ottawa they will be able to experience historic architecture, six museums, wonderful markets, great dining, three cultural festivals, and many incredible bookstores,” Mr. Paris declared.
The conference schedule offers a range of programming, from academic reflections on theological themes to practical tips on theological librarianship. There will be presentations about emerging technology as well as discussions on the preservation of historical artifacts.
The opening plenary address will be delivered by Leslie Weir, University Librarian at the University of Ottawa and President of the Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL). Ms. Weir will examine whether Scholars Portal, a state-of-the-art research infrastructure, has attained its initial goals to support teaching and research in Ontario’s universities. The second plenary session will be led by Dr. Gregory Gerhard Baum, professor emeritus of McGill University’s Faculty of Religious Studies and one of Canada’s leading contemporary theologians. His presentation will address the way in which Church/State relations in Canada have differed from those in the United States.
In addition to five pre-conference workshops addressing such valuable topics as customer service, fundraising, new standards for library cataloging records, and the role of teaching and learning in the library in support of theological education, attendees are able to select from a range of informative roundtables, papers, and panel discussions. Sessions are tracked to serve the needs of ATLA’s members, with several offerings specifically tailored to librarians engaged in public services, teaching, or technical services.
Several excursions have been planned by the Local Host Committee.
Attendees will be able to visit to Gatineau Park and the MacKenzie King
Estate, the Library and Archives Canada Preservation Center, the Library
of Parliament, and the Library of the Association for Baha'i Studies -
North America. An Ottawa River Dinner Cruise and a Reception at
